“Margaree Salmon Association Uses Electrofishing for Fish Monitoring”

In recent years, the Margaree Salmon Association in northern Cape Breton has been utilizing electrofishing as a method to monitor fish populations in the Margaree River. This technique involves the use of an electric current to temporarily stun fish, allowing crews to safely capture, measure, and identify them before releasing them back into the river.

According to Michael Fabiano, the conservation co-ordinator of the association, the electrofishing activities typically occur from May to late September, with a mortality rate of around two percent among the thousands of fish processed each season. Prioritizing fish safety, Fabiano mentions that electrofishing is avoided when water temperatures are excessive.

Crews carefully regulate the current levels to ensure that fish only experience a brief stunning effect to minimize harm. To ensure crew safety while working with electricity in water, members wear protective gear like heavy rubber gloves and chest waders. Fabiano notes that no serious electrical incidents have occurred during his tenure of 18 months with the association.

The teams conduct surveys along the 120-kilometre river to pinpoint its most productive streams and evaluate the overall health of the fish population. The catch primarily consists of trout and Atlantic salmon, with occasional sightings of eels and lampreys. This season, the association has already captured and released approximately 1,800 fish across nine streams, showing a decrease compared to the previous year.

President Paul MacNeil highlights that the association intensified its scientific research efforts due to reduced data collection by Fisheries and Oceans Canada over the past five years. Established in 1982, the group sought dependable data to monitor river health amidst changing climate patterns. To address the data gap, the association collaborated with the Chéticamp River Salmon Association to acquire electrofishing equipment. While manual fish counting in the river is also conducted, MacNeil emphasizes that electrofishing yields more precise data on juvenile fish populations.

The partnership’s electrofishing approach enables capturing a significant portion of juvenile fish in a specific area, enhancing the accuracy of population assessments. The joint effort aims to maintain thorough data collection and analysis to safeguard the Margaree River’s ecosystem amid environmental challenges.
