Flight attendants working on Air Canada Express flights are currently in the process of voting on whether to approve strike action due to stalled bargaining talks, as reported by their union. The Canadian Flight Attendant Union, representing approximately 1,000 flight attendants, is pursuing a strike mandate after failing to come to terms with Jazz Aviation on key issues despite nine months of negotiations and involvement of a mediator.

The union emphasized the importance of a strong strike mandate to convey the seriousness of unresolved matters to Jazz Aviation. In response, a spokesperson for Jazz Aviation stated the company’s dedication to achieving a resolution at the negotiation table without disruptions to operations. The company is now seeking the appointment of a conciliation officer as discussions with the Canadian Flight Attendant Union have hit an impasse.

Among the primary concerns for the union are wages, compensation for ground work, and enhancements recognizing the impact of the profession on members’ lives. The union highlighted that Jazz flight attendants have not kept pace with their counterparts in other Canadian airlines, particularly given recent industry agreements. Additionally, the union aims for recognition of its members as safety professionals due to their responsibilities in ensuring passenger safety.

The significance of safety in the aviation industry was underscored following a fatal incident involving Air Canada Express Flight AC8646 at LaGuardia Airport earlier this year. The union stressed that safety begins with fair working conditions, adequate rest, and respect for the flight attendants who oversee passenger care daily.

Voting on the strike mandate is set to conclude on Friday at noon. This development follows recent strike actions by WestJet flight attendants and Air Canada flight attendants in the past year. The potential timing of a strike by Air Canada Express flight attendants remains uncertain pending the outcome of the current vote.
