With flag football gearing up for its Olympic premiere, Canada is one of the nations vying for the initial spots in the 2028 Los Angeles Games at the ongoing world championships in Germany. The tournament will see two slots available for both the men’s and women’s Olympic competitions, each comprising only six teams. The United States, a dominant force in flag football, secures an automatic berth, while the remaining three positions for each gender will be determined through a two-phase qualifier in June 2028, commencing in Montreal.
While the outcome of these world championships does not solely dictate Olympic qualification, securing a spot now would alleviate the pressure of having to compete in the last-chance qualifier in the following two years.
The tournament format involves sixteen teams participating in both the men’s and women’s events in Germany, grouped into sets of four for the preliminary matches held on Thursday and Friday. The top two teams from each group will progress to the knockout stage starting on Saturday. The medal matches, determining the world champions and Olympic qualifiers, are scheduled for Sunday.
The top two finishers in each tournament will earn a direct ticket to the Olympics. However, a third-place finish could suffice if the U.S. reaches the final, potentially leading to thrilling bronze-medal contests.
The Canadian women’s team will commence their group stage matches by facing Panama at 2 a.m. ET on Thursday, followed by a match against Brazil at 8:15 a.m. ET. They will conclude the group stage on Friday at 4:30 a.m. ET against Japan.
Meanwhile, the Canadian men’s team will kick off their campaign against Austria at 5:45 a.m. ET on Thursday, with their second match against Japan scheduled for 2 a.m. ET on Friday. Due to Nigeria’s withdrawal from the competition due to visa issues, Canada has been awarded a default win in their final group match.
The women’s team, ranked fourth globally, has a storied history, having won world championships in 2010 and 2014 and clinched a bronze in 2018. Despite their ranking, the team faces stiff competition from Mexico, the U.S., and Great Britain, with the U.S. aiming for a sixth consecutive world title. On the other hand, the Canadian men’s team, ranked 10th, is striving to improve on their previous bronze-game exits in 2010 and 2014, with the U.S. leading the rankings and Austria surprisingly holding the second spot.
