Cristiano Ronaldo has indicated that the current Saudi Pro League season could mark the end of his illustrious football career. The 41-year-old football icon’s contract with Al-Nassr, the Riyadh-based club he joined in December 2022, is set to expire in June next year, and according to his interview with Vogue magazine, he does not foresee extending it.
“I believe this will probably be my final year in football, and my aim is to leave behind a remarkable legacy,” Ronaldo mentioned. Having recently tied the knot with his longtime partner, Georgina Rodriguez, the Portuguese forward, who has netted a total of 976 goals in his career, shared his thoughts on the future. “I have my post-football plans all laid out. There are numerous activities to keep me occupied. Football has been a major part of my life for 25 years, and finding diverse interests is crucial to fill the void it may leave,” he added.
Ronaldo expressed his intentions to have more fun, travel extensively, engage in padel, a sport he enjoys, and continue to relish the rewards of his hard work. Reflecting on his achievements, he emphasized the years of dedication and sacrifice that have contributed to his success.
The ongoing 2026-27 SPL season marks Ronaldo’s 25th year in professional football. Throughout his career, he has clinched five Ballon d’Or accolades and secured five UEFA Champions League titles. His notable contribution of 28 league goals in the previous season played a pivotal role in Al-Nassr’s triumph in the Saudi Arabian league in May, marking his first title win since joining the club and the club’s first league victory since 2019.
Following his recent nuptials, Ronaldo missed Al-Nassr’s season opener as they commenced their title defense with a resounding 3-0 victory over Al-Fateh. Coach Ange Postecoglou acknowledged Ronaldo’s continuous support, emphasizing his presence within the team. Looking ahead, Ronaldo is expected to feature in the upcoming King’s Cup match against Al-Diriyah. Postecoglou highlighted the significance of recovery given the tight schedule following the previous game.
Ronaldo’s contemplation on retirement comes shortly after his long-standing rival Lionel Messi disclosed uncertainties about his future in football following his father’s passing. Messi, aged 39, expressed his doubts about continuing to play the sport he has devoted himself to for so long.
