Three individuals required preventive treatment after being exposed to the infected animal, as confirmed by Santé Québec Montérégie-Centre. This incident underscores the critical need to ensure pets are regularly vaccinated, especially as raccoon rabies continues to spread across Estrie, Montérégie, and Centre-du-Québec.

Health authorities emphasize the importance of keeping pets indoors or supervised outdoors to prevent contact with potentially infected wildlife. They advise against approaching unknown domestic or wild animals, regardless of their appearance or health status. In case of contact with a potentially rabid animal, individuals are urged to wash the affected area thoroughly for 10 to 15 minutes and contact Info-Santé at 811 promptly for immediate medical assistance.

Early preventative treatment is essential to halt the progression of the disease. Symptoms of rabies in animals include behavioral changes, aggression, biting tendencies, isolation, loss of appetite, excessive salivation, and unsteady movements. Pet owners are advised to isolate any animal showing these signs and promptly seek veterinary care.

Recently, the Environment Ministry reported the first case of raccoon rabies in Saint-Eugène-de-Grantham, Centre-du-Québec, prompting residents in Eastern Townships, Montérégie, and Centre-du-Québec to report any suspicious wildlife behavior. Reporting of dead, injured, disoriented, or aggressive raccoons, skunks, or foxes is encouraged through an online form provided by the ministry.
