Unconventional Journey: From Biomedical Engineering to Rockies Trail Guide

Grace Stelmachowicz, residing in Squamish, B.C., shared her journey deviating from the traditional path to success. Raised with the belief that success meant following a linear route of education, career, marriage, homeownership, and parenthood, Grace found herself challenging this norm in 2016. Despite studying biomedical engineering at the University of Guelph, her summer job at a horseback riding outfit in Banff National Park took her on an unexpected adventure.

In Banff, Grace embraced the Rockies on horseback, fulfilling her childhood dream of riding in the mountains. Her experiences included guiding guests through forests, driving horse teams by the Bow River, and leading visitors to meadows teeming with wildlife. This unconventional career path reshaped her definition of a fulfilling life, emphasizing moments of tranquility and gratitude amidst challenging work conditions.

Seasonal work introduced Grace to a diverse group of individuals, including career breakers, international travelers, and full-time seasonal workers. The deep connections formed during her time as a trail guide in Banff left lasting impressions, unlike any relationships built in academic or corporate settings. While goodbyes were inevitable as seasonal workers parted ways, the friendships and lessons endured.

Despite initial skepticism from her family about deviating from her engineering background, Grace found solace in her unconventional choices. Her experiences as a seasonal worker not only broadened her horizons across Canada but also empowered her to pursue a career in international sales. The independence and problem-solving skills honed during her time as a guide continue to influence her current role, though she occasionally yearns for the simplicity of mountain life.

Acknowledging the divergence from her family’s expectations, Grace now cherishes the life she has crafted. By embracing change and seeking fulfillment beyond societal norms, she has discovered a new perspective on success. Her advice to others echoes the lessons learned from seasonal work: venture out, experiment, and savor the journey of self-discovery.
