In a surprising turn of events, Molly, an African spurred tortoise not native to the wetlands of Oak Hammock Marsh in Manitoba’s Interlake, was discovered ambling slowly along the marsh’s edges. Gillian Malchuk, a nature interpreter at Oak Hammock, expressed astonishment at the unexpected presence of the 36-kilogram tortoise in the area.

After receiving numerous reports of tortoise sightings, the staff at Oak Hammock embarked on a search and rescue mission for Molly. A sighting logged on the iNaturalist app confirmed the unusual visitor’s identity, leading to the swift discovery of the misplaced tortoise.

Upon locating Molly in the parking lot, staff members at Oak Hammock provided her with care, feeding her cucumbers and flower petals while making arrangements for her return home. Subsequently, Molly was reunited with her delighted owners on July 22, who had raised her since she was a baby.

Despite the joyous reunion, the mystery remains as to how Molly managed to travel approximately 20 kilometers to the marsh from her home. Speculations suggest that perhaps a well-intentioned individual relocated her to what they thought was a suitable habitat or that Molly embarked on the journey independently.

Reflecting on the unusual incident, Malchuk remarked, “How she made it over 20 kilometers to the marsh, only Molly can tell.” The tortoise’s escapade, though puzzling, ended on a heartwarming note as she was safely returned to her loving family after her unexpected adventure.
