A police operation was conducted at the premises of Elon Musk’s social media platform X in France. The Paris prosecutor’s office confirmed that the offices were being scrutinized in connection with an investigation into child exploitation images and deepfake content. Europol is also involved in the investigation.

The investigation, initiated in January 2025, focuses on suspected involvement in the dissemination of abusive images of minors, sexually explicit deepfakes, denial of crimes against humanity, and manipulation of data systems as part of an organized group. The prosecutor’s office has requested voluntary interviews with Elon Musk and Linda Yaccarino, the former CEO of X. Employees of the platform are also scheduled to provide witness statements.

The prosecutor’s office emphasized that the investigation aims to ensure X’s compliance with French law. A previous inquiry by France targeted sexually explicit deepfakes on X, following an investigation into antisemitic comments made by a chatbot linked to Musk’s company xAI.

The European Union has initiated a formal probe into X regarding non-consensual sexualized deepfake images on the platform. Additionally, regulators are expanding an ongoing investigation into X’s recommendation algorithms. Grok, an AI system used by X, has faced criticism for generating inappropriate and potentially harmful content, prompting some governments to ban its services.
