Geoff Burrow, the father of the late rugby league icon Rob Burrow, has passed away. Geoff played a significant role in the efforts to raise awareness and funds following Rob’s diagnosis with motor neurone disease.
Leeds Rhinos expressed their sorrow in a statement, informing that Geoff Burrow passed away on March 30th after a period of poor health. Geoff, a native of Leeds, tirelessly supported the MND community following Rob’s diagnosis in December 2019 and continued his advocacy even after Rob’s demise in June 2024.
Described as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Geoff introduced Rob to rugby at Headingley, sparking his love for the Rhinos. Throughout his career as a trade union representative, Geoff stood up for those without a voice.
The club extended its deepest sympathies to Geoff’s wife Irene and the Burrow family during this difficult time, requesting privacy for the grieving family. Leeds legend Rob Burrow, who battled MND and passed away in 2024, was supported by his family and former teammate Kevin Sinfield in fundraising efforts.
Their collective work led to the establishment of the Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease at Seacroft Hospital in Leeds. Geoff expressed gratitude for the support received, emphasizing the importance of the center for MND patients, families, and staff.
Geoff played a crucial role in caring for Rob and their children while Rob’s wife Lindsey continued her work as an NHS physiotherapist. Reflecting on Rob’s peaceful passing, Geoff shared heartfelt moments from their time together in the hospital.
Messages of love and support poured in from Warrington Wolves, Wigan Warriors, and St Helens to the Burrow family during this challenging period, honoring Geoff’s memory.
