“Caution Urged for Fire TV Users Amid Downloader App Scam”

Fire TV Stick users need to exercise caution when adding new apps to their devices due to a recent development. The popular tool “Downloader” has been removed from Amazon’s Appstore, creating an opportunity for a fraudulent copycat app targeting users’ finances.

The disappearance of Downloader from Amazon’s online marketplace came unexpectedly over the weekend, causing concern among users. For almost a decade, Downloader has been a go-to tool for Fire TV owners to access and install apps not found in official stores.

Despite its long-standing popularity, Downloader faced a temporary suspension, as confirmed by its developer, Elias Saba. Amazon flagged Downloader as a full web browser in a recent update, breaching the platform’s policy against third-party browsers on Fire TV devices.

Saba, who operates the Fire TV site AFTVnews, clarified that the issue arose from Downloader’s new browser identification rather than its core functionality. A corrective update removing the browser registration has been released in hopes of Amazon’s approval for reinstating the app soon.

During this period, users are warned about a fake version of Downloader attempting to deceive Fire TV owners into a subscription scam. Saba advises against installing this fraudulent app and urges affected users to report it to Amazon.

For existing legitimate Downloader users, deleting the app is discouraged, as reinstalling it will be impossible until Amazon resolves the situation. Additionally, users are advised to disable Auto Offload to prevent automatic removal of the app.

If Amazon greenlights the fix, Downloader could be back on Fire TV devices later in the week, but users are advised to stay vigilant.
