“Approval for Higher Council Tax Hikes in Seven UK Councils”

Seven local councils have received approval to raise their council tax by more than 5%. In England, councils typically have a 5% limit for council tax increases, requiring a referendum for larger hikes. Shropshire, Worcestershire, and North Somerset councils can increase their share by up to 9%, while Trafford, Warrington, and Windsor and Maidenhead have been allowed up to a 7.5% raise. Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole Council can boost their share by a maximum of 6.75%.

Council tax is expected to rise annually every April, with the average Band D council tax in England for 2025/26 estimated at around £2,381. This development follows the government’s announcement of a three-year settlement providing approximately £78 billion to local authorities across England. Councils facing significant funding cuts will benefit from a targeted investment of £440 million through a Recovery Grant uplift, with a total of £2.6 billion allocated by 2028/29.

Local government minister Alison McGovern emphasized that the reforms aim to distribute funds where needed most, acknowledging the financial challenges some councils still face. She clarified that the flexibility granted on council tax increases serves as a limit rather than a target, emphasizing that decisions on tax levels are at the discretion of local authorities.

Many individuals are missing out on potential council tax discounts ranging from 25% to 100% based on personal circumstances and living arrangements. Eligibility criteria for discounts vary by council, with specific schemes like Council Tax Support or Council Tax Reduction available for benefit claimants or those on low incomes. Residents are encouraged to contact their council directly to explore potential discounts applicable to their households.

Moreover, homeowners have the option to challenge their council tax banding, as discrepancies exist in bands for numerous properties. Correcting an inaccurate band could lead to significant refunds and lower future bills, although thorough research is advised to avoid potential cost increases or impacts on neighbors due to band adjustments.
