Nigel Farage is under pressure to remove a Reform council candidate following controversial remarks described as offensive and racially insensitive. Mike Manning, the Reform UK candidate for Redcar, made derogatory comments about Jewish and Muslim communities, suggesting that circumcision affects their behavior. Manning, a former Royal Artillery serviceman, also made disparaging remarks about African-American cultural celebrations.
Anna Turley, Chair of the Labour Party and MP for Redcar, has called for Manning to be dismissed as a candidate, criticizing the increasing instances of racism and bigotry among Reform politicians. Turley urged Farage to take a stand against such language and immediately suspend Manning’s candidacy to disassociate from his offensive comments.
Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader Daisy Cooper has joined in the condemnation, demanding Farage expel Manning for his insulting statements towards Jewish and Muslim groups. Cooper emphasized the need for political figures to reject and condemn such hateful views, asserting that there is no place for such beliefs in British politics.
Cooper further addressed Farage, questioning the vetting process for Manning and urging immediate action to remove him from Reform UK due to his unacceptable views. Following a disciplinary investigation, Reform UK has withdrawn its support for Manning’s candidacy after admitting to inadequate vetting processes.
Manning is running for the Zetland ward on Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, where the Labour Party holds the largest number of seats but the council operates without overall control. Last year, Reform UK expelled their council leader in Staffordshire for posting discriminatory content on social media.
During a recent press conference, Farage acknowledged deficiencies in Reform UK’s vetting procedures. As a result of the investigation, Reform UK has revoked support for Manning as a candidate.
