“Tesco Mobile Launches The Family Chat Campaign”

As their 11-year-old son prepared to enter secondary school this fall, Giovanna and Tom Fletcher decided it was time for him to have a mobile phone. Recognizing the importance of communication and safety, the couple emphasized the need for open dialogue.

Concerned about the potential risks associated with smartphone use among children, Giovanna, aged 40, highlighted the necessity for parents to engage in discussions with their children to empower them. With the holiday season seeing many children receiving smartphones as gifts, families are now navigating the challenges and benefits that come with this technology.

In collaboration with Tesco Mobile, a campaign called The Family Chat has been launched to encourage families to discuss online device usage regardless of their children’s ages. The campaign aims to raise awareness about resources like Tesco Mobile’s age-specific toolkits and parental support.

Giovanna expressed her enthusiasm for the campaign, emphasizing the importance of continuous learning as a parent. With two other sons aged seven and nine who use tablets for communication and entertainment, Giovanna stressed the significance of maintaining communication channels, especially when parents are away for work.

When their eldest son transitioned to high school, they provided him with a restricted smartphone to ensure communication without excessive distractions. Setting boundaries and explaining the reasons behind them have been crucial in their approach to technology use with their children.

Recognizing the need for balance, Giovanna highlighted the family’s rules regarding device use, such as no phones in the bedroom or at the dinner table. She emphasized the gradual introduction of internet access to children based on their readiness.

To enhance online safety for children, parents are advised to set up child accounts, ensure accurate age settings, activate safety filters, use parental controls, and maintain open conversations about online activities. Dr. Rebecca Whittington, Reach’s online safety editor, emphasized the importance of prioritizing safe device setup to protect children from online harm during their initial interactions with technology.
