Xi Jinping emphasized the importance of strengthening ties between the two nations, highlighting the necessity for both world peace and economic prosperity.

The remarks made by President Xi were perceived as a reflection on the disruptive presidency of Donald Trump, who has frequently threatened tariffs against allies. The leaders convened at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing as part of Mr. Starmer’s historic three-day visit to China, marking the first visit by a British Prime Minister in eight years.

President Xi acknowledged the ups and downs in the relationship between the two countries, pointing out that past Labour governments had significantly contributed to the growth of China-UK relations. He expressed confidence that history would judge their ability to overcome differences positively.

Quoting a Chinese proverb, President Xi emphasized the importance of taking a broad perspective, respecting differences, and focusing on collective interests to pass the test of time. The visit, coinciding with the upcoming Chinese New Year, was described as a symbol of good fortune by President Xi, while the Prime Minister stressed the need for a more strategic partnership with China.
