A major shift is looming in how households in the UK stay connected with their loved ones. Starting in January of the upcoming year, consumers nationwide will transition from traditional copper-wire phone lines, also known as the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), to a new technology known as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).

VoIP is a modern system that utilizes an internet connection for making phone calls, replacing the old-fashioned analog wiring. Despite initial concerns, switching to VoIP offers significant advantages, including improved call quality, more reliable connections, and added features like spam call protection and call forwarding.

Although the transition has been in the works for some time, many individuals seem unaware of the impending change. A recent report by the telecoms team at Phonely revealed that over 58.7% of UK adults aged over 50 are unaware of the planned shutdown of traditional landlines, despite ongoing industry alerts and the extended deadline set for January 31, 2027.

Phonely warns that this lack of awareness could lead to a surge in last-minute upgrades in 2026, potentially causing issues such as equipment shortages, delays in installations especially in rural areas, and increased strain on telecom providers.

“With less than a year until the UK’s analog landline network is permanently switched off, new research indicates that millions of over-50s are still unaware of the upcoming change,” Phonely stated.

For many older households that prioritize stability and reliability, the transition signifies a significant adjustment. As the 2027 deadline approaches, experts advise against delaying the switch.

“The extension to 2027 has generated a false sense of security,” expressed Bryn Thompson, Director at Phonely. “The fact that nearly six in ten over-50s are still unaware of this change should concern all stakeholders. A last-minute rush could lead to chaos.”

Dan Skipper, Chief Executive of Age UK Norwich, noted, “These changes pose various questions for residents, and a lack of awareness may cause unnecessary worry, particularly for older individuals who rely on their landline for social connections and safety. So, what exactly is changing with landlines, and how can one make the switch?

The UK’s copper-based PSTN network is being phased out and replaced with digital VoIP services. After January 31, 2027, traditional analog landlines will cease to function, with calls being made through broadband connections.

While younger households have largely shifted to mobile phones, many individuals over 50, particularly in rural areas, still rely on landlines for daily communication, emergency contacts, and telecare alarm systems, as it remains a dependable means of connectivity in certain regions.

Telephone providers are expected to reach out to customers directly regarding the switch and explain the necessary steps. The transition itself should not incur additional costs. In most cases, households will only need a broadband connection and a compatible phone for the new system.

However, concerns have arisen due to the reliance on internet access, as some older consumers remain offline. Solutions for those without internet access are being explored ahead of the 2027 deadline, but individuals worried about the change are advised to contact their phone provider to explore available options.
