A well-known hotel and dining establishment abruptly shut down after operating for 46 years, causing distress among its clientele.

Guys Thatched Hamlet, situated near Bilsborrow in Lancashire off the A6, has officially closed its doors, ending its 46-year legacy. The hotel, boasting 65 rooms and set by the canal on St Michael’s Road, ceased operations and laid off all its employees.

A closure notice has been affixed to the hotel’s entrance, signaling the end of its operations. The expansive site, spanning nearly 14 acres, encompassed a pub, eatery, sports pavilion, event spaces, a cricket field, bowling green, and three parking lots.

According to the Lancashire Post, the closure notice stated: “After 46 years of trading, we can confirm Guy’s Thatched Hamlet has now closed. This decision, reached after careful consideration, marks the end of an era. We express our heartfelt gratitude to our patrons, staff, and suppliers for their unwavering loyalty and support over the years.”

Heartbroken patrons have taken to social media to express their sadness at the closure. One reminisced, “This is where my partner proposed to me in 2012.” Another lamented, “I also got engaged here in 2015. Such a loss.”

Another individual shared, “I have been a regular at Guys for years and even proposed to my significant other in the restaurant, receiving applause from fellow diners. It’s saddening to see it go, and hopefully, someone will preserve its essence.”

The Wilkinson family has managed the business since 1980 and listed it for sale last year, disclosing a reported net turnover of approximately £4.2 million with no specified guide price.

The property description highlighted the hotel’s prime location, accessibility to tourist attractions like the Lake District and Fylde Coast, and its appeal to both leisure and commercial guests due to its strategic positioning near major motorways.

Noted as a distinctive establishment in the North West of England, Guy’s Thatched Hamlet enjoyed consistent year-round patronage, with peak business during summer and holiday seasons.
