Retired champion jockey Rachael Blackmore has revealed that she is pregnant with her first child alongside fellow jockey Brian Hayes. The couple recently got married in a cozy ceremony in West Cork on January 5 after a decade-long friendship.
The 36-year-old shared the happy news on her Instagram story, showcasing a photo of her Volvo car with a baby pram in the boot, captioned with “Love driving the Volvo XC60 BA. Boot contents looking a little bit different now.” Blackmore, who retired from horse racing last year, made history as the first woman to win the Grand National and to be the leading jockey at Cheltenham.
Originally from Tipperary, Blackmore achieved 575 wins during her professional racing career before retiring in May last year, marking a stellar career highlighted by notable victories, including partnering with Minella Times at Aintree in 2021.
Her remarkable achievements in 2021 included being the leading rider at the Cheltenham Festival, securing 18 wins, and triumphing in various prestigious races. She was also honored with the World Sports Star award at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards.
Blackmore and Hayes, who have known each other for over ten years since meeting at a stable in Co Carlow, have a shared passion for horse racing. Despite their racing backgrounds, the couple rarely discusses the sport at home. Blackmore acknowledged Hayes’ crucial support in her career upon her retirement, emphasizing his significant role.
The couple, often seen together at various events, enjoy a mix of activities beyond racing, including attending Wimbledon, music festivals, and vacations. Brian, aged 34, has had a successful career as a jockey, notably riding for prominent figures like Willie Mullins and securing one Cheltenham Festival victory.
Overall, Blackmore and Hayes’ journey from friends to partners in life and horse racing has been one filled with shared passions, mutual support, and exciting milestones.
