Virgin Media has exciting news for some of its broadband customers awaiting faster speeds. The company has announced that a select group of users will soon receive a complimentary upgrade to their home routers.
In a recent blog post, Virgin Media revealed plans to introduce advanced technology to eligible customers without any additional charges. The upgrade initiative will target individuals still using the older Hub 3 and Hub 4 devices.
These outdated routers lack the performance capabilities of the newer Hub 5, which features enhanced Wi-Fi 6 technology for quicker and more reliable connections.
According to Virgin Media, eligible customers will be notified via email in the upcoming weeks and months as the upgrade is gradually implemented throughout 2026.
Virgin Media highlighted, “The Hub 5 is our latest router, equipped with Wi-Fi 6 technology and seven internal antennas to ensure robust and consistent coverage across your home. We are progressively upgrading selected customers currently utilizing older hubs, with thousands poised to benefit in 2026.”
If you qualify for the upgrade, Virgin Media will contact you directly, eliminating the need for proactive steps until you receive communication from them. Alternatively, you can verify your eligibility by accessing your My Virgin Media account online.
To identify your router model, check the sticker on the back or bottom of the device, or log in to the Virgin Media Connect app for the information.
Wondering if the upgrade is worth it? Virgin Media asserts that the Hub 5 offers expanded Wi-Fi coverage, improved stability, and readiness for future enhancements. It is optimized to support faster Gig1 speeds, resulting in accelerated downloads and streaming. With Gig1 speeds, users can download a full HD movie in less than 40 seconds, significantly faster than the UK average.
Curious about Wi-Fi 6? It represents the latest wireless networking technology, delivering enhanced speeds, efficiency, and performance in busy environments. Wi-Fi 6 accommodates more connected devices simultaneously, enhances performance on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, and is more energy-efficient, ideal for modern homes with numerous connected devices and high data requirements. While even better Wi-Fi 7 technology is available, Wi-Fi 6 suits the average user perfectly.
