Snooker Legend John Virgo Dies at 79

Snooker legend John Virgo’s unexpected death at the age of 79 has been disclosed today, prompting an outpouring of tributes from the snooker community and beyond.

Virgo, a prominent figure in snooker during the 1970s and 1980s, achieved a career milestone by winning the 1979 UK Championship and reaching the semi-finals of the World Championship in the same year.

In the 1990s, Virgo gained widespread recognition as a co-host of the popular TV show Big Break alongside comedian Jim Davidson, becoming a familiar face on screens across the nation.

Known as the voice of snooker, Virgo enjoyed a successful career as a commentator for the BBC, where his signature catchphrase, ‘where’s the cue ball going?’ became synonymous with his broadcasting style. His passing was attributed to a ruptured aorta, a source close to the family confirmed to the Mirror.

Virgo resided in Spain with his wife Rosie, who expressed her heartfelt tribute shortly after his demise. She fondly recalled their almost 16-year marriage, describing Virgo as her true love and best companion.

Close friend James Malyon, who shared a passion for golf with Virgo, expressed shock at the sudden loss, emphasizing Virgo’s larger-than-life personality and his role as the heart of any gathering.

Renowned snooker champion Ronnie O’Sullivan, who considered Virgo a lifelong friend, expressed deep sorrow at the news of Virgo’s passing, highlighting their cherished moments together.

Fellow BBC commentator and seven-time Crucible champion Stephen Hendry also paid tribute to Virgo, reminiscing about their recent collaboration and praising Virgo’s unparalleled talent for injecting excitement into matches.

Jim Davidson, Virgo’s colleague from Big Break, mourned the loss of his dear friend, acknowledging Virgo’s unique character and immense contribution to the world of snooker.

In 2020, Virgo and Rosie relocated to Spain in search of a better climate to alleviate Virgo’s chronic neck pain. Virgo is survived by his son Gary and daughter Brook-Leah from previous marriages.
