An NBA game featuring the Golden State Warriors and Minnesota Timberwolves was postponed due to a fatal shooting by an ICE agent in downtown Minneapolis on Saturday. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that the match has been rescheduled to 4.30pm local time on Sunday following the incident where an unarmed man was killed by federal agents during a protest.
The NBA issued an official statement explaining the decision to postpone the game, citing the need to prioritize the safety and security of the Minneapolis community. The rescheduled game is now set for 4.30pm CT on January 25 at Target Center.
ESPN host Ernie Johnson announced the postponement of the game live on air, expressing his inability to provide further details. He turned to fellow ESPN analyst Charles Barkley for a reaction, who emphasized the need for responsibility in the face of the tragic events, stating, “Somebody’s gotta step up and be adults. Two people have died for no reason, and it’s just sad.”
The shooting took place near the Target Center, with the identity of the shooter yet to be disclosed. This incident is not the first time an NBA game has been delayed due to a shooting involving law enforcement. In a similar vein, during the 2020 NBA playoffs in the Florida bubble, a Milwaukee Bucks game was called off as players protested against the police shooting of Jacob Blake, a Milwaukee resident.
