Elderly Woman Dies After Fall in Pothole: Family Tribute

The family of a beloved elderly woman who tragically passed away on Christmas Day after a fall in a pothole has shared a heartfelt tribute in her memory.

Beryl Barrett, residing in Warsop, suffered a fall outside Warsop Town Hall when her walking aid got stuck in a pothole. Despite efforts to recover, she succumbed to her injuries a week later in the hospital. Medical recommendations for surgery were made, but she later experienced respiratory failure leading to her untimely death.

Expressing their sorrow, the Barrett family released a statement highlighting the circumstances surrounding their mother’s death. They described her as an active 87-year-old who enjoyed church, bingo, and social gatherings with loved ones.

The incident occurred when Beryl was crossing Church Street in Warsop after a visit to the hairdresser. She tripped over her walking aid, falling onto the road, where passersby and emergency services provided immediate assistance. It was determined that she had suffered a broken femur and hip injury from the fall.

Councillor Bert Bingham from Nottinghamshire County Council extended condolences to the family, emphasizing the seriousness with which incidents causing harm on public roads are investigated. He refrained from further comments pending ongoing investigations.

In a parliamentary session, Mansfield MP Steve Yemm raised the issue of Ms. Barrett’s tragic death, urging Nottinghamshire County Council to address road maintenance. The Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, stressed the importance of road repairs, highlighting a £2 billion investment in the East Midlands to enhance local transport infrastructure and enforce quality standards for road maintenance.

This tragic event has sparked discussions and calls for improved road maintenance and safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
