“124-Year Prison Sentences for Doorstep Killer Group”

A group of individuals who were involved in the killing of a woman on her doorstep have been sentenced to a total of 124 years in prison. During the verdict announcement, two of the perpetrators engaged in a violent altercation in court.

Jackie Rutter, a mother of six and grandmother of five, was fatally shot at her residence in Wirral in October 2022. The prosecution stated that the motive behind the crime was related to a suspected robbery or extortion scheme, triggered by an incident where Ms. Rutter’s sons allegedly took a phone used by James Byrne for his drug trafficking operations under the “JJ Line.”

The shooting took place the following day, with Barrie Glynn acting as the driver for the perpetrators. Simon Allen set fire to the stolen vehicle used in the crime before escaping with the others on a motorcycle. David Harrison provided his residence as a base for the group on the night of the murder.

During the sentencing hearing, Byrne, aged 21 at the time of the offense, received a life sentence with a minimum term of 40 years. Allen and Harrison were also given life sentences with minimum terms of 28 and 26 years, respectively. Glynn was sentenced to 30 years, with eligibility for release after serving two-thirds of the term.

Byrne, Allen, and Harrison were previously convicted of murder, while Glynn was convicted of manslaughter. All four were additionally found guilty of firearm and ammunition possession with intent to endanger life, as well as arson.

Another individual, Anna McGinn, faced charges for assisting an offender by driving Byrne home after the shooting. McGinn, who fled to Turkey, was not present during the court proceedings.

Describing the events, Mr. Justice Goose stated that the crime involved extensive planning, including surveillance and preparation of the crime scene. He highlighted the tragic loss of Jackie Rutter, a grandmother with a history of drug addiction who was not involved in criminal activities.

Jackie’s daughter, Louise Rutter, shared in court how her mother’s death led to a personal struggle with drug use and the emotional impact of losing her best friend. The defendants remained mostly stoic during the sentencing, with one remarking, “Joke,” as they were led away.
